DOES THE CHILDREN’S BOOK DOLPHIN HAVE A TOOTHACHE? TEACHES GOOD ORAL HYGIENE HABITS IN A DELICATE, SUBTLE AND VERY FUN WAY
Finding a child who brushes their teeth three times a day without making a mistake and who is already aware of how important it is to have a healthy diet is a rarity. Well, not inside Dr. Naia Tonhá Almeida’s office. And to the delight of her parents and teachers, she used all her pediatric dentistry knowledge as inspiration to write the book Does Golfinho have a toothache?, released on December 10, 2016, in São Paulo.
Inside and outside Brazil, there are few children's books with a dental theme”, says Dr. Naia, who identified the lack in the publishing market before debuting in the world of letters. “In children’s literature there is a lack of illustrated and rich works whose main objective is to encourage healthy behaviors, especially those related to oral health.

The work begins with the charismatic dolphin Tursi crying in pain and asking for help on the high seas. From the beach sand, dentist Dr. Tchanaia hears the lament and looks for a way to help him. And so, between diving, boat trips, curiosities and, of course, lots of tooth care, an adventure begins.
The person who gave even more personality and colors to the story was the illustrator Fabio Antunes with very vivid drawings created using 3D technique. In order for the book to be published with total personalization and without any interference, the author created NaiaBooks, an independent publisher that has a long way to go.
“One of my objectives is to enable the distribution of the work in all regions of the country and use it as support material in lectures for children in cities further away from urban centers and also in other states”, she says.
Does a dolphin have a toothache? It has already been translated into English and Spanish and has a large niche to be covered: in Brazil, the number of children between 1 and 6 years of age has already exceeded 20 million.
